Hair Colours They Are a-Changing...Lucretia and Gaia

ImageApologies to Bob Dylan for bastardising his song title but I just noticed this and figured I would write about it.

Did anyone notice the colour of Gaia's hair is the same colour as Lucretia's from Season 1? Lucretia has Lucy's natural brown colour.

Interesting. I wonder how much influence Gaia is going to have over Lucretia since it looks like the older Lucretia of Season 1 is mimicking her friend Gaia.

We do know that Lucretia tries to copy women she admires or wants to connect to (going blond for Ilithyia). Fascinating.

Gods of the Arena Promo Pics and Poster Confirmation

Image We finally get some promo pics from Gods of the Arena!

Firstly, the poster on the left is real and it was confirmed by Steven DeKnight on his Facebook page: "For those of you wondering, yes, this is real. That's the amazing Jaime Murray in the background, and Dustin Clare looking extra manly in his gladiator gear." Many thanks to Luna and Roland for the news.

Next we have some gorgeous promo pics of Gannicus, Oenomaus and Batiatus.

The House of Batiatus has towered above the city of Capua for many years. "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" will explore its deadly history before the arrival of Spartacus, and the death he carried with him. It's a time of transition as Quintus Lentulus Batiatus takes the reins of his father's stable of gladiators, with ambitions to elevate the house beyond all former glories. With his beautiful, scheming wife Lucretia at his side, he will stop at nothing to see his name forever carved into history. Batiatus stakes his fortunes on the roguish gladiator Gannicus, a man whose skill with a sword is surpassed only by his appetite to live every day as if it were his last. But there are those who would see Batiatus and his champion destroyed. Loyalties will be tested, lives shattered, and battles waged in this thrilling prequel to "Spartacus: Blood and Sand."

Image

Gannicus (Dustin Clare) - click on the image for the larger scan

A true physical specimen, fearless in the arena and possessed of a thirst for the fleeting pleasures of life, Gannicus is the gladiator a girl’s mother doesn’t want her to bring home. Newly promoted to the top position at Batiatus’s ludus, Gannicus is best friend to Oenomaus and his wife Melitta, forming an unlikely triangle of loyal friendship

Image

Oenomaus (Peter Mensah) - click on the image to view larger scan

Oenomaus is, we already know as Doctore but at this time he is not yet the rigid disciplinarian who will come to reign over the ludus as the gladiator trainer. He is not far removed from the status of top gladiator at the House of Batiatus, having only recently survived his fight with the legendary Theokoles. He longs to return to the sands of the arena and reclimb the peak he feels is rightfully his, but he is yet a slave like so many others and bound to the notions of his masters. He finds himself caught in the middle of much turmoil, his status seized between the generational conflict within the house, between old loyalties and new responsibilities.

Image

Quintus Batiatus (John Hannah) - click on the image to view larger scan

Batiatus is one in a long line of gladiator owners in his family, and at the time of the prequel, with his father away attempting to regain his health, has newly come to inhabit the role. Bold and impulsive where his father is restrained and conventional, Batiatus wishes to seize more for himself, to rise beyond his father’s station. With his wife Lucretia ever by his side fueling his ambitions, Batiatus schemes beyond his reach.

Spartacus Season 1 Episode 8 Mark of Brotherhood on GO!

Image

Tonight on Spartacus Blood and Sand on Aussie TV - it's Episode 8 Mark of Brotherhood

Mark of Brotherhood
Batiatus purchases a fresh batch of slaves at an auction to be trained as gladiators and ponders the idea of selling Crixus. Ilithyia coaxes a new recruit to try to kill Spartacus.

Credits | Official Page | Promo Pics | Episode Promo #1 #2 #3

My first reaction to this episode was 'oh those poor slaves' and then it was "oh my those slaves" <g> Illythia new slave has some serious problems on his hands by the end of the episode. Since the log line spoils that particular pairing he does indeed try and please his new Domina.

The episode has several subplots running through it. The aftermath of Crixus' wounds, Naevia and Lucretia's concern for him; neither of them wants to see Crixus be sold off to another Ludus, Barca's "freedom", the relationship between Crixus and Spartacus, the power plays, Varro and the rest of the Ludus. It's a hotbed of intrigue. Batiatus is up to his usual nasty ways but that's now normal programming for the Dominus.

We get new slaves who are in for a world of hurt (some more than others). One major subplot involves Lucretia and her BFF Illythia. What a fascinating look at those two. The young Roman is going to find herself in a very sticky situation; one of her own making that will come back and bite her (or not)

The ending will make you sit up and take note. Two slaves follow their Domina's orders...one is thrilled and the other...not so thrilled with the outcome. Let's just say it's sometimes not a great idea to follow the orders of your Domina. Not a good idea at all.

Rating: 8/10

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena Poster

ImageWow. This is one hell of a poster! Not sure if this is the official poster (it looks like it). Starz will also be releasing official photos soon so those will be going up shortly.

Pictured is Batiatus, Lucretia, Gaia (Lucretia's long time friend) and the Champion of Batiatus' Ludus Gannicus

TV Week Preview of Season 1 Episode 9 Gladiators Are Go!

gladiators-whoreprevAustralia's TV Week Magazine has a preview of one of my favourite episodes "Whore". Next week Australia gets the chance to view this episode. I'm not sure what the episode will look like with all the editing but it will be interesting.

Katrina makes her debut in this episode as well and we get to see Lucretia becoming totally loopy over the possibility of losing Crixus..that wall will never be the same again and neither will Licinia. <g>

Just a mention about something in the article. The reviewer says that Katrina bears an uncanny resemblence to Erin. Um. No they don't other than the dark hair. Very different to me.

Sometimes I wonder if the Aussie reviewers have actually watched the show; before the show started one reviewer described the show as a teenage Spartacus: the early years!! Nothing teenage about Andy Whitfield!

Ausiello: Spartacus May Close Up Shop...

Ausiello from EW has an article about what will happen now that Andy has left the show to concentrate on his battle with cancer.

Personally I can't see why they would shut down the show. It's a hit show and despite what we all want (for Andy to come back as Spartacus) this will not happen. Andy's health comes first. Starz is a business and it has to look at the business side; they showed alot of heart by allowing Andy time to recover but now it's  different. Andy will no be back and they need to move forward.

My personal opinion is that they will recast Spartacus and move on with the show. There are so many people relying on Season 2 to go into production; a whole industry of people and the trickle down effect of suppliers etc. Shutting it down doesn't make good business sense. Spartacus is Starz' flagship show and quite popular.

Ausiello quotes Steven:

"The two main options are to close up shop or recast," says DeKnight. "I want to talk to Andy and find out how he feels about the options. That's obviously very important to us.

"We're still absorbing what's happened," adds DeKnight. "I think it's going to be a little while before we reach any conclusions." (Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, a prequel to the series, will still air as scheduled in January 2011.)

Star's Loss Raises Question Over Spartacus Series

2010 8 2 12 21 53 090820-Spartacus-05-0521 CRT cópiaThis is an interesting article about how much the show costs to produce.

Wellington, Sept 20 NZPA - The withdrawal of British actor Andy Whitfield from playing title role in the proposed second season of US cable television show Spartacus has raised questions over future plans for the TV series, which has contributed millions of dollars to Auckland's movie-making industry.

"The future of Starz's Spartacus series is now in doubt," reported an industry website which specialises in news on ending television series, tvseriesfinale.com.

Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in March and, after treatment, was declared cancer-free in May. He was training hard to get back into filming, but has now been advised by his doctors to resume aggressive treatments immediately.

In a statement, Whitfield said: "It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved."

Spartacus was renewed for a second season even before the first started airing, but when filming of the second season was postponed so Whitfield could undergo treatment, Starz ordered a prequel called Spartacus: Gods of the Arena which focuses on co-stars Lucy Lawless and John Hannah.

Whitfield was supposed to return to shoot Spartacus next month, but Starz Media managing director Carmi Zlotnik, said: "We will address our programming plans at some later date."

The prequel is still filming in west Auckland and will screen in the United States in January. The second series which has been contracted was expected to air next September.

Reuters reported the first series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, cost more than $US2.74 million ($NZ3.76m) for each of the 13 hour-long episodes filmed over 149 days from March 31 last year.

Though Spartacus benefited from New Zealand rebates of 20 percent of what was spent here, executive producer Rob Tapert -- who along with Sam Raimi produced the cult hit Xena: Warrior Princess -- admitted at one stage he had to ask Starz for more money.

That first series was the highest-rated show on cable in the coveted adult audience aged 18-49 years on 12 of its 13 Friday screenings.

The series features Whitfield as the title character, a Thracian fighting to return to his wife after being sold into slavery at a gladiatorial school, run by the deceptive Lucretia (Lawless) and her power-hungry husband Batiatus (Hannah).

The show also features New Zealand actors Antonio Te Maioha, Manu Bennett and Craig Parker.

We Must Choose Hope - Andy Whitfield's Cancer

Image

Quite a few years ago an actor I admired greatly, Christopher Reeve, said:

"Once you choose hope, anything's possible."

A simple but very powerful statement. On May 27, 1995, Christopher became a quadriplegic after being thrown from a horse in an equestrian competition.

Like Christopher, Andy is facing a battle to save his life. Back in July we all rejoiced at the news that Andy Whitfield had beaten back the cancer that struck him during the filming of Spartacus Season 1. He looked great at Comic Con; a little skinny but looking fantastic. He received the all clear from his doctors and was ready to go back to Capua.

Official news hit my inbox this morning and I was dumbstruck. I looked at the email and just couldn't believe it. A decent, gentle guy who had the world at his feet, a young family and a great future but cancer had other ideas. I saw "Cancer" and everything else was blotted out. The fact that Andy won't be back for Season 2 is not important. What is important is that he gets the treatment he needs, recovers and spends the rest of his long life with his family. Andy's cancer has returned after the doctors gave him all the all clear.

That's how life is sometimes. It's cruel. We get the huge joys and great heartaches. Everyone has come to love Andy for his brilliant portrayal of Spartacus, the Thracian slave, in Spartacus Blood and Sand. Andy WAS Spartacus. Above all else, Andy is a fantastic guy.

When he was initially diagnosed in March 2010 with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, there was shock but a hope that Andy caught it in time and was going to be treated AND recover.

In July 2010, Andy celebrated his return to public life by declaring his was cancer free and went to his first Comic Con where he was greeted like the champion that he is.

The cancer had aother ideas. His Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma is back and he has to undergo aggressive treatment. Into the arena he goes for another battle; this time not as the mighty Spartacus but as Andy Whitfield, the husband, father, son, friend, favourite actor to many.

If this adversary could be beaten by love, the fans outpouring of love would have destroyed the cancer. Alas it cannot.

Andy, your family, your friends and your fans are behind you and supporting you.

Battle On, Andy, Battle On.

NEWSFLASH: Andy to undergo more Cancer Treatment

Oh my god this is so so so sad. I just received this and sadly passing it on. This is horrible. My heart goes out to Andy, his family and his friends.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Andy Whitfield, star of Starz's "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," has been advised by his doctors to immediately resume aggressive treatment for a recurrence of cancer, as a result of which he will not be returning for the series' second season, which was tentatively set to air in September 2011.

"It’s with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as ‘Spartacus’ and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far," said Whitfield.

"Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time," said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. "Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength, and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us."

No decisions have yet been made about the future of the series. "Right now, we just want to extend our concern and support to Andy and his family," said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director, Starz Media. "We will address our programming plans at some later date."

Starz still plans to air the prequel to "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" in January 2011. Entitled "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," it focuses on the House of Batiatus before Spartacus arrives in Capua and stars returning cast members John Hannah, Lucy Lawless, Peter Mensah and Manu Bennett, along with newcomer Dustin Clare.

Katrina In The Resistence Brings Katrina to Starz & Spartacus - Hollywood Reporter

Image'Resistance' Web series tests TV waters
EXCLUSIVE: Starz gives webisodes multiplatform launch

Starz Media is ready to test the waters for sci-fi action thriller "The Resistance" and will do so by taking advantage of the digital age.

The project, originally envisioned as a Web series, could blossom into a TV series or even a movie, depending on the reaction to a pilot of sorts that will be distributed through digital platforms and a one-night TV outing. It's an example for how the entertainment industry is experimenting with new models for the creation and testing of content.

To gauge "Resistance's" potential, Starz on Oct. 4 will take over the 11 p.m. hour of Syfy's two-hour Ani-Monday anime block, which is programmed by Starz's Japanese animation arm Manga Entertainment.

The "Resistance" story runs about 35 minutes as the producers have placed all webisodes back-to-back for the TV version. Added behind-the-scenes material makes for 44 minutes of content.

For digital distribution, the TV version will be split into two pieces for iTunes, Xbox, PlayStation Network, Amazon and other platforms. Hulu will get the advertising-supported Web run. The ad-supported four- to five-minute webisodes with animated intros will be available within a few weeks of the TV airing on YouTube, DailyMotion and MetaCafe.

"Resistance" is set in a world where brilliant chemist Syrus Primoris has taken control in the wake of a devastating virus that has killed 99% of the population. Only Primoris' suppressant keeps the survivors from succumbing to the plague. One group opposes his regime and fights to find another cure.

If audience reaction -- including buzz on social networks and the blogosphere -- seems promising, the partners will consider turning "Resistance" into more than a one-off.

"We wanted to see if we can launch something in a truly multiplatform, experimental way via TV and digital," said Marc DeBevoise, senior vp digital media, business development and strategy at Starz Media and the lead executive for Starz Digital Media. "We would like to see it blossom so we can do more with it."

Others are using digital as a test ground. MTV recently teamed with Eventful to launch a social-media campaign for its indie slasher film "Savage County" and gauge interest in a TV run.

"Resistance" came to Starz via Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures, Starz's production partner on "Spartacus: Blood and Sand." In 2008, Ghost House executive Aaron Lam noticed the online trailers for the Web series project on YouTube and thought he may have found a "Spartacus" director. He looked up creator Adrian Picardi on Facebook -- only to find out he was a 21-year-old fresh out of film school.

But impressed by the vision of Picardi and his producing partner Eric Ro, Lam talked to Starz, which agreed to put up money -- believed to be in the low-six-figure range, or a minimal percentage of the cost of a TV show episode -- to put together an initial "Resistance" story.

Picardi served as director, cinematographer, writer and editor, and Ro was a producer and cinematographer.

One immediate benefit that Starz and Ghost House got out of it was that they liked the work of Katrina Law, who plays resistance leader Lana Strife. They cast her as Mira in "Spartacus."

If the buzz for "Resistance" is strong, a TV series is one option.

"That's what we had in mind, and that's where we still hope it will go," Lam said.

Spartacus Spoilers for Season 2 from Ausiello!!

This was posted in Ausiello's latest spoilers update

(BE WARNED THERE BE SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2)

Question: I'm very disappointed by the lack of Spartacus: Blood and Sand spoilers. To make up for this, how about a spoiler on the second season? It's only fair. --Carol

Ausiello:

I broke my wrist ag *f a **. Don't lecture me about fairness, Carol. Having said that, your timing is fortuitous as I just got off the phone with series creator Steven S. DeKnight. Sparty's boss told me that the search for a new Big Bad (or big Bads) to fill the void left by John Hannah's Batiatus will soon get under way. "There will be some new people on the villain side," he says. "But we're not far enough into [season 2] to nail down any big casting news." DeKnight went on to say that he "kicked around" the idea of a romance between sworn enemies Spartacus and Ilithyia, but he added that "it's a tricky thing since she tried to kill him several times, and he firmly connects her to Glaber, who he partially blames for the death of his wife. But will they have some interesting interactions in season 2? Absolutely."

‘Spartacus’ Creator Says Viewers See More on Disc

Image

‘Spartacus’ Creator Says Viewers See More on Disc - Home Media Magazine

If there’s one advantage to TV series on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” creator and executive producer Steven S. DeKnight said it’s that all the gore and nudity cut to make episodes work for TV get put right back in.

“The sexual content especially was a little too much for Starz,” he said. “Look for more orgy scenes and a gladiator with a large endowment.”

Fans of the series will find that and a lot more when Anchor Bay Entertainment releases the first season of the series on DVD ($59.97) and Blu-ray Disc ($79.97) Sept. 21.

“We have a ton of bonus features — lots of on-the-set stuff, a commentary with almost every episode,” Knight said. “I’m most excited to see it in 1080p.”

The DVD and Blu-ray sets will both have featurettes about the history behind “Spartacus,” make-up effects, actors training to be gladiators, along with the commentaries, episodes with enhanced digital effects, bloopers and trailers. The Blu-ray gets an exclusive four “Director’s Cut Extended Episodes,” selected by executive producer Rob Tapert.

“For those scenes cut, sometimes it’s just because of pacing or we had too much footage,” DeKnight said. “A lot of the way the show looks is because of Rob.”

Besides the added gore and violence, DVD and Blu-ray also give people who’ve missed episodes a chance to watch them all concurrently.

“Each episode got better as the season went along, and we picked up more viewers along the way,” DeKnight said.

While Knight praised all the actors in the series, he saved special praise for the man who plays Spartacus himself, Andy Whitfield. The actor was treated for Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma earlier this year.

“We looked high and low to find Spartacus,” DeKnight said. “We were lucky to find him.”

THR - TV's Top 50 Showrunners - Steven S. DeKnight

ImageSteven S. DeKnight
"Spartacus: Blood and Sand" (Starz)

In his next life, DeKnight wouldn't mind running a show that takes place in the real world. "You know, a nice quiet family drama where people sit around and talk about their feelings -- that'd be great," he says. The "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" and "Smallville" alum scored this year with Starz's gladiator action series, which premiered to record-setting viewership in January. He's currently in Vancouver filming a six-episode prequel. Favorite TV Moment: "I've been rewatching old TV movies that scared the crap out of me as a kid, like 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.' I remember being really young, in the '70s, and sleeping with the lights on for two years after that."

Big Break: "Joss Whedon plucked me from obscurity to write for 'Buffy' and taught me everything I know, especially about running and producing a show. But technically, my first paying TV job was on MTV's primetime soap, 'Undressed.' And I share that honor with Damon Lindelof."

Spartacus Season 1 Episode 4 The Thing In the Pit - Edited Version Review

Spartacus Season 1 Episode 4 The Thing in the Pit.
Reviewed by MaryD

spartacus-ep4-11Having performed shamefully in the arena against Crixus, Spartacus is forced to fight in the Pits. Batiatus, determined to profit from Spartacus, may be at risk if his debts aren’t repaid.

Here are my thoughts of the episode. I didn't review the unedited version way back in Feb so I don't have notes to compare this version with that but I'm going from memory (please correct me if I'm wrong). The timing of the episode is 60 minutes (Foxtel IQ has a neat timer so I checked that from start to end credits). The edited episode + adverts.

1. Lucretia and Quintas are talking about The Pits and how Barca is going to protect him in the pits. I've replayed this scene about 5 times and I still can't figure out what Lucretia said she was going to do with Barca's jewels if he had harm were to befall to her husband. It's a garbled mess.

2. The face ripping scene...GONE!! Had to be the cleanest fight ever with minimum amount of blood.

3. Crixus and Naevia scene...a total scene cut completely. I don't believe this. The scene where Crixus gives Naevia the necklace and she knocks it back. Why the heck was that scene edited out? Doesn't make sense. Was this scene in episode 3 and I totally missed (and forgot it) or was this in episode 4?

4. Lucretia and Crixus scene .. edited a great deal, lots of closeups and only shown for a few seconds.

5. The violence is back but an amazing lack of the red stuff. Sparty is all bloodied up but no red stuff to be seen anywhere. Amazing.

6. I love Varro's loyalty. I miss his passing.

7. Okay what happens when you hit someone's flush in the face and break his nose? Answer? Nothing. Only slow motion whap. Wow. They edited out the blood.

spartacus-ep4-028. One of my all time favourite scenes: Naevia gives Crixus a real talking too, calling him thick! I *LOVE* this scene :) Go Naevia! Crixus of course stops her in mid rant with a kiss. LOVE those two. What's even cuter is that Naevia is really enjoying this kiss and then breaks off and she's mad :) LOL!

9. It's Batiatus' turn to feel the wrath of his wife. I love this scene as well. I just love the fact this series doesn't make the women weak; thank you Steven! Lucretia just loves her Quintas.

10. My other favourite scene is the dream Sparty has of Sura and him falling to his knees clutching at her. That has to be one of the beautiful scenes. The rain comes and it's blood - so now they find the red stuff but that's also edited out a great deal.

11. Sparty saving Batiatus' life. There is something so unreal about all the violence without the blood; I keep saying it but it's true. It truly looks ridiculous that you can slice a man and not have a single blood spot.

12. One the best scenes in all the series follows Batiatus' rescue and that is between Lucretia and Batiatus. I simply adore this scene. Lucretia's hatred for Spartacus reaches new levels. She loves her husband but fears what Sparty will do (she should, she's not gonna like ep 13). I love these two; they are twisted; they are cruel but the love they have for each other is just so pure. Lucy Lawless and John Hannah are just SUPERB. I know it's been said before but these two are just magic together.

Something I neglected to mention is the end credits. In the original you have a montage of Lucretia and others. In the edited version you don't see that at all. The editing even extends to the end credits.

So ends episode 4. Next week is episode 5.
