John Hannah Video Interview & Transcript

Bravo has an exclusive interview with John up on their site. Unfortunately it's only for UK visitors. Barbara Davies who is in the UK has transcribed the interview and it's below. Thanks Barbara!

Exclusive Bravo Video Interview with John Hannah
Transcribed by Barbara Davies

John:

"The cast generally were great. It was a great, great meeting of international souls. Of course, over any period of 8 months that chops and changes. What you find, I think, as an actor, you know, who you're going to get on with in a cast so often depends on what you are going to have to do with them. And it's weird. This is not like some Method thing (Marlon Brando Method thing, although I love Brandon). This is not like a Method thing, this just seems to be something that happens.

"If you play a happy character, who's always laughing and having a good time, chances are you probably will feel a bit more upbeat than somebody who's like slitting their wrists and being miserable and going around and all that, you know. So the people that you get on with are the people that you actually interact with as characters in a positive sense.

"And although most of the time I was being pretty devious and mean and lying to Andy, on the front of it we're getting on great, we start bonding, he trusts me, that trust goes on. Peter Mensah, we have a similar kind of relationship. Lucy (my wife) was just an adorable, adorable human being. And it was only as you then start to do mean and nasty things to them and think mean and nasty things are being done to you that you suddenly find yourself changing in your relationship and that's something that happens subconsciously.

"And it's not Method, it's not thought about, it's not intended, you just find yourself doing that ... And Nick Tarabay, who at first was as far as I was concerned just one of the slaves ... One become dismissive of the slaves. Then you realise you have a relationships where you are being more di dur di dur with them and that relationship becomes a little bit stronger. And it changes all the way through. But ultimately, and I can honestly say this, hand in heart, that it was such a great crowd of people. There wasn't somebody you try and avoid. You go 'Oh Christ, I'm not going to makeup because XYZ's in there, chatting away and I canna be bothered with the sound of their voice.' It really wasn't like that.

"We filmed the show in New Zealand, which was an amazing experience, amazing opportunity to get down there and to experience that part of the world. But also there were a couple of actors who were from New Zealand, which was great. They became sort of like hosts, in the sense of taking us to various places: beaches and the like. Taking us fishing. Mark Mitchison who becomes one of my henchmen, we went fishing together and stuff ... surfing. And then everybody else came from somewhere else, from all over the world: Australia, Palestine, South Africa, Ghana, Los Angeles. So everybody became like this family on set. There were little events that we did together. People went off and did things. It was really cool. So New Zealand is where we filmed it, it was our home for last year."

Why Spend So Much Print In Trashing A Show

Image

Why Spend So Much Print In Trashing A Show
by MaryD

So much print and bandwidth has been wasted in disparaging Spartacus from the UK (and the US previously) that I find it simply amazing. I'm surprised I actually read this drivel but since the site is about Spartacus, I only post articles that are positive (negativity is just so icky).

For example I was reviewing an article from The Guide (UK) today and this guy wastes a whole page in telling his readers how bad the show is. Wow.

These critics can't see past the sex, past the nudity and go blind to the actual storytelling.

This post also serves to reply to those very helpful people who send me articles on Spartacus. I don't post everything I get because the critics are wrong (in my opinion) but thank you to everyone who submits these articles / scans for me.

This is a great show; it has a stunning cast and great storytelling. Yes it has sex, nudity, blood and guts but so does the nightly news. I don't watch the nightly news for the storytelling (actually I don't watch the nightly news...very depressing).

Maybe there is a plan here. When you tell someone they can't watch it or they shouldn't watch it, people watch just to see why they shouldn't watch.

The ratings for the show are fantastic which I guess is the best revenge agains these critics.

Listen to the people...not the critics.

DO YOU SEE THE SHOW RUNNING FOR SEVERAL SERIES?

Oh yes, I'm sure they can go off on any number of detours. I could see five or six series. I should be so lucky to be involved throughout. No doubt I'll be heinously murdered at some point.

Spartacus Review Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

indexPittsburgh Post Gazelle - 28 May 2010
Best bloody show

The Starz series "Spartacus" began as a CGI-blood-soaked mess but it improved as it moved through its first season and eventually became TV's most addictive, violent soap-for-guys since HBO's "Oz." Characterizations improved and plot turns surprised in this story of a gladiator and his manipulative masters, played in terrific turns by John Hannah and Lucy Lawless. The show's first season will be out on DVD Sept. 21.

SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND

While we’re waiting for the gladiatorial combat that is the World Cup to take over the telly schedules, here’s something almost as exciting to be going on with. Even people who have never seen Kirk Douglas in Stanley Kubrick’s great epic know who Spartacus is — and this is a particularly energetic incarnation, slicing the limbs of opponents and engaging in post-match relaxation with assorted ladeez with all the energy of an England left-back.

UK Spartacus Ratings

TV ratings: Spartacus lifts Bravo - Heavily promoted US import gets 10 times channel's average for slot – but is only 15th most-watched thing on multichannel

The UK premiere of the graphic sex and sandals drama Spartacus: Blood and Sand gave Bravo its biggest ever audience last night, Tuesday 25 May.

The heavily promoted US import, described by the Radio Times as "a blur of boobs and bullet-time camerawork" and "a swords-and-sandals epic for the Nintendo DS generation", was broadcast on Bravo between 10pm and 11.15pm, attracting 365,000 viewers a 2.2% audience share.

Bravo's previous highest audience was for an episode of Blade broadcast in January 2007.

Spartacus delivered a huge ratings boost to Bravo, with an audience share nearly 10 times the network's average for the slot over the past three months. This was by far the best performance by this comparison of any multichannel show yesterday.

Lucy Happy to be Forever Xena
Monday 24th May 2010

Her next TV role is about to make her a screen icon all over again, but Lucy Lawless realises she will always be Xena in the hearts of her fans. But the star of new historical epic Spartacus: Blood and Sand, says the fans of her Nineties fantasy yarn have made her what she is today.

She told the Press Association: "They are fantastic. If you have those kind of fans you should value them because they are just so powerful and loyal and they will give you so much - they will stick with you." but she admits to sometimes feeling peculiar about the lengths her fans will go to prove their support.

She laughed: "I hate it when people get tattoos of me or Gabrielle. Sometimes they're really wonky!

"People can do what they want but people ask me to sign their arm and they'll run off and get it tattooed and they come back and show me and I'm like 'what have you done?' I hate that. I even feel weird signing a kid's T-shirt in case their mothers want to kill me. Please, no."

The new series airs Tuesdays on Bravo at 10pm.

Spartacus Modern Day Fresco

Spartacus 'fresco' features Simon Cowell and Gordon Brown

A celebrity artist has created a modern-day version of a traditional Roman fresco, casting Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and the warring Gallagher brothers as gladiators.

Image

At its centre is star of the show Andy Whitfield, who stands over two of his victims, one of them former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Welsh-born Whitfield is a man who epitomises courage both on and off-screen as he portrays the rebellious warrior slave Spartacus and in real life battles non-hodgkins lymphoma.

Describing his inspiration for the painting, Karslake said: "After watching several episodes of Spartacus, I was struck by how contemporary society holds just as much sex, violence and deception as it did in Roman times.

"Every day, modern day gladiators vie for our attention and are held up for our entertainment in a bid to win our affection, ratings or votes.

"If Simon Cowell had been around in Ancient Rome, would he be running Gladiatorial schools or does Gordon Brown's demise bear any resemblance to emperors of the past?"

Spartacus: Blood and Sand airs exclusively on Tuesdays at 10pm from Tuesday May 25 and stars Scottish actor John Hannah and Lucy Lawless.

Hannah, who plays Batiatus, owner of the Gladiator arena said: "I think we all like that historical world.

"We want to know where our society has come from and who we are, and what we were without the constraints of civilization.

"I think those kind of people still exist - they're just dressed in suits and pinstripe shirts now. I can see the modern parallels."

Historian and writer Natalie Hayes said: "Ancient Rome is no different from the modern world.

"We no longer watch chariot races or gladiatorial fights but we watch races just like Romans did - for us the chariots have become Formula 1 cars.

X is a roller-coaster ride through a lurid red-light world of high-class escorts, hookers and bent cops, X chronicles a chance encounter on the mean streets of Kings Cross that changes the course of two women’s lives.

Viva describes her character:
My new movie is a contemporary, urban story about two prostitutes – one is a high-end escort, about to leave everything behind her and move to Paris, and the other is a teenage runaway experiencing her first night on the street. I play the escort.

Lucy Lawless Roman About In The Buff

02-lucretia smallSunday Mail; Glasgow (UK)
May 2010

Actress Lucy Lawless would be the first to defend her army of fiercely loyal - some might say obsessive fans - but even she draws the line at tattoos.

It used to be enough for people to get a signed photograph, but more now feel the need to get Xena Warrior Princess immortalised on their bodies - and Lucy isn't impressed by the results.

She said: "I hate it when people get tattoos of me. I've seen full colour tattoos of Xena and Gabrielle on people's back.

"I've signed people's arms and they have run off to the tattoo shop and had my signature tattooed.

"They then come back to show me and I think 'Why did you do that?' I feel weird signing t-shirts in case people's mothers want to kill me, so to get a tattoo of me, I just hate it."

But if fans have gone to extremes to show their devotion in the past, tattoo parlours should be braced for big business after Spartacus: Blood And Sand hits screens in the UK.

It is billed as a historical epic about the legendary fighter who led a slave uprising against the Romans. But before it's arrived from the US, it has caused controversy with its scenes of graphic violence and sex.

Andy Health Update - Andy In Remission

ImageThis is excellent news for Andy that his Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma is in remission. John Hannah was interviewed on the BBC show "The One Show" and revealed that Andy is in remission. UK residents can watch/listen to these on the BBC iPlayer. John mentions that Andy is 'in remission'. Unfortunately for the rest of us not in the UK you can't view the interview.

Andy's remission was also mentioned in The Guardian UK interview with John on 16 May 2010

I ask what's next, and he says he's preparing for the second series of Spartacus in New Zealand. This had to be put on hold when the lead actor, Andy Whitfield, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Hannah says he is now in remission.

MERCK lists the following about remission for those with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

It is somewhat of a paradox that indolent lymphomas usually respond readily to treatment by going into remission (in which the disease is under control), often followed by long-term survival, but the disease usually is not cured. In contrast, aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphomas, which usually require very intensive treatment to achieve remission, have a good chance of being cured.

There hasn't been any official word from Starz updating on their press release about Andy's illness. Hopefully that will come soon.

Unfortunately for those outside the UK, you can't view the video clips. No mention is made of when the episode will air.

Update from Barbara Davies:

[UK residents can watch/listen to these on the BBC iPlayer. John mentions that Andy is 'in remission'.
The consensus seem to be that John's puppy Coco is cute <g> and that Spartacus is 'graphic' and 'full on'.
The radio interview is longer and more interesting e.g. John talks about nudity clauses, the ancient Roman equivalent of phrases like 'Is the Pope Catholic?', about accents, about allowing the programme makers to make the show they want, and trying not to think about Monty Python's take on the Romans.]

Star of 'Spartacus' recovering, ready soon for season two

Fans of Spartacus on Starz can now rejoice. The racey period piece about the Roman Empire is coming back in a six episode prequel early next year, and production is expected to resume soon on season two.

The show was delayed when star Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with early-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Sources at the network say Whitfield is recoving and he will be in season two. On the Red Carpet's Chris Balish caught up with one of the stars of the show, actress Lesley-Ann Brandt, and asked about Whitfield's health. "He’s great. I just got an email from him and he’s doing really good. He’s just about finished his treatment."

Brandt went on to say that fans of the show can expect plenty more of the show, "We’re ready to give you guys another couple of great seasons of Spartacus for sure.”

Spartacus will air a six episode prequel this summer, followed by season two, next year on Starz.

"I mean there’s action. There’s drama. There’s sex scenes," actor Nick Tarabay said. "There’s good looking people. I mean you can’t go wrong. And whatever it is that hooks you up in the beginning after a while the drama will catch on because it’s written so brilliantly." Tarabay says the show pushes the limits of violence and mature sexual content.

Spartacus is coming back in a six episode prequel set to air early next year. And production is expected to resume soon on season two. The show was delayed when star Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with early-state non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Sources at the network say Whitfield is recovering and he will be in season two.

The Guardian UK Interviews John Hannah

ImageJohn Hannah defends nudity and sex in Spartacus- Guardian UK Newspaper 16 May 2010

The actor, who stars in 'the most explicit, violent series' ever made, says his only concern was the language

Three minutes into my interview with actor John Hannah, and he is crouching in front of me – half-hovering, half- kneeling – mimicking a sex act. Actually, he is mimicking the mimicking of a sex act. I'm trying to look at him head on, without laughing nervously or grimacing, but my hands keep rising, involuntarily, to cover my eyes.

Hannah's mime is not entirely inappropriate. Actually, in any other circumstance, it would be utterly, bizarrely inappropriate – but in discussing his new TV drama, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, it's pretty much par for the course. The show arrives on Bravo later this month, amid a fanfare of hype and controversy – it was originally commissioned and shown by the US cable network Starz, and has been called "the most explicit, violent series" ever made.

News Release Issued: May 11, 2010 4:36 PM EDT

Production on Starz' 'Spartacus' Six-Part Prequel to Begin This Summer

Andy Whitfield to Appear In Two Episodes Along With Lucy Lawless, John Hannah, Peter Mensah Plus Other Returning and New Characters

LOS ANGELES, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- NCTA Cable Show 2010 -- Pre-production is underway on a six-part prequel to Starz' hit original series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand."

Andy Whitfield, who played the title character in the series, will appear in the prequel briefly, but Lucy Lawless and John Hannah take center stage in this story of the rise of the House of Batiatus and its champions before Spartacus arrives as a captured Thracian slave.  With the title still to be determined, the prequel will begin production this summer in New Zealand, and is slated to air on Starz in January 2011.

John Hannah returns as Batiatus, owner of the Ludus, along with his wife Lucretia, played by Lucy Lawless.  Other returning actors include Peter Mensah (Doctore), Manu Bennett (Crixus), Antonio Te Maioha (Barca), Nick E. Tarabay (Ashur), Lesley-Ann Brandt (Naevia) - and others.  New characters will also be added - most notably the gladiator who was champion of the House of Batiatus before Spartacus or even Crixus - who will help fill in the story about the people and politics in the House of Batiatus and ancient Capua as a whole.

150 Reasons to Have Pride in 2010 - Spartacus & Lucy Mention

ImageAdvocate.com has a great article on 150 Reasons to Have Pride in 2010

Page 28 has the following Spartacus / Lucy mention

BECAUSE WE LIKE MOVIES ABOUT GLADIATORS, JOEY: If you’re complaining about the historical accuracy of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, you’re completely missing the point. The sweaty, sex-obsessed sword-and-sandals series on cable network Starz features enough glistening, chiseled, and usually nude bodies to make the cast of 300 turn green with envy. Star (and lesbian icon) Lucy Lawless’s return to scanty period garb is just icing.

When In Rome MovieScope Magazine May-June 2010

Moviescope Magazine has a great article on Spartacus. Their May/June issue features the article. Barbara Davies sent in the following exerpt from the magazine and you can purchase it from MovieScope.

When In Rome
MovieScope Magazine / June 2010 Issue

Love it or hate it, controversial new TV show Spartacus: Blood and Sand is like nothing you’ve seen before—on the small screen, at least. DoP Aaron Morton explains how he achieved cinematic visuals for a television audience.

If you haven’t heard of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, you soon will. The TV show following the life of the legendary gladiator slave, which has been both applauded and chastised for its unflinching sex and violence, is to hit UK channel Bravo in the summer. A heady mix of bloody battles, political intrigue and steamy romps, it employs green screen and effects techniques usually seen in blockbuster movies. But, although comparisons with films like 300 are inevitable, New Zealand based director of photography Aaron Morton has made it his mission to make Spartacus unique. “We didn’t have a graphic novel like 300; they had a blueprint for their visual direction. We were searching for our own look, we were finding out way over those first few shows, and wanted it to pack a bit of an early punch!”

And pack a punch it certainly does, but Morton is quick to point out that it’s not “sex and violence for its own sake. It’s grounded in decent writing, and there’s always a story point involved.” A series that concerns itself with life in gladiatorial Rome was never going to be family viewing, but Morton admits that the stylised visuals are used as much to make the show’s themes more palatable as to set it apart. “I wouldn’t want it to feel like a snuff movie! It’s obviously contrived. There’s these gritty bad guys who kill other dudes, so I didn’t want to make it glamorous!”

Times Online Historical Mini-Series Just Got Sexier

Image

The following is a very lengthy article about Spartacus Blood and Sand from The Times Online
in preparation for the show's premiere on UK Bravo on 25 May at 10 pm

The historical mini-series just got sexier
Times Online 9 May 2010

Here’s what we know about Spartacus. He was an escaped Thracian gladiator. He recruited an army of slaves. He defeated the Romans several times in a two-year campaign. Eventually, he was killed on the battlefield as Marcus Licinius Crassus routed his army. And little of that is absolutely certain. Our two main sources — the historians Plutarch and Appian — wrote at least 100 years after his death, and their accounts differ. Yet that hasn’t stopped Spartacus entering the cultural canon as a timeless symbol of rebellion, appearing everywhere from The Goon Show to punk songs, at least 10 novels, the classic Kubrick film, a cartoon series, the movie Clueless, a ballet and — almost inevitably — a concept album by Jeff Wayne.

Spartacus Star Andy Whitfield Ready To Do Battle

Spartacus star Andy Whitfield ready to do battle
In true gladiator style, Whitefield fights illness before second season of Spartacus

Entertainment Today - 7 May 2010

Spartacus: Blood and Sand, the classic tale of the legendary gladiator, has become a breakout success story for cable’s premium Starz Network. The first season finale airs April 16, but the filming of the second season was recently delayed while its titled star, Andy Whitfield does battle with a medical condition.

The muscular Spartacus star, Whitfield has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and he is receiving treatment. The Starz Network released a statement reporting the cancer was discovered during a routine checkup as Whitfield prepared to go into production for the sophomore season in New Zealand.

The Whitfield expects to come back in true gladiator style, and the athletic actor reports, “I’m receiving excellent care, and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me.”

Even before the show premiered, word of mouth had spread about Spartacus being akin to the film 300 with its graphic novel look. It is filled with splattering violence, as well as sex as explicit as Starz would allow, and still be considered artistic in the visceral storytelling.

At Starz Entertainment, the second season of "Spartacus" is still delayed without a production start date due to the recent cancer diagnosis of star Andy Whitfield. Without sharing specifics, management Friday said there have been encouraging developments recently on his health status though. Until he is ready for a full second season, executives said they want to keep the series and fan interest alive in creative ways.

Spartacus Slays Manilla Times 6 May 2010

Spartacus Slays! - Manilla Times
6 May 2010

WITH everything I’ve been hearing about the new television mini-series Spartacus, I had my expectations set on a slice of television that would satisfy my predilections toward more primal persuasions.

Spartacus happily and shamelessly borrows much from the Zach Snyder film 300. The dirty, sweaty, beautiful, muscular men, the slow motion flight of the spear, shield, dagger or sword before it hits flesh, the spewing of fireengine-red blood across monotones. The various stages of dishabille, the casual manner clothes are tossed off. All here, lovingly art directed for your viewing pleasure.

But it will certainly take more than that to capture the interest of viewers— and I was wonderfully surprised to find out it does.

Spartacus is the story of a brave, honorable, passionate warrior from Thrace who was arrested by the Roman army for insubordination. Instead of dying in the arena for his crime, he rocks the decadent Roman audience and has them raising their fists and calling his “name.” His life is spared and a man known as Batiatus purchases him.

This is where the fun begins. Batiatus is played wonderfully by John Hannah Matthew from Four Weddings and a Funeral and Rachel Weisz’s scheming brother in the Mummy movies. And, surprise, Lucy Lawless a.k.a. Xena the Warrior Princess plays his cunning, complex and loving wife and partner, Lucretia.

Show Patrol Interviews Katrina Law

Image

Show Patrol interviewed Katrina and it's a pretty cool interview. Check it out.

Somebody to watch: Katrina Law's ready for more 'Spartacus'

It's unlikely we'll ever see Katrina Law wearing her long hair Snooki style.

But the gorgeous New Jersey native, who played the slave Mira in Starz' "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" this past season, doesn't deny how "real" some cast members on MTV's "Jersey Shore" are--especially the guys.

"It's just so funny because everybody in Jersey is all up in arms right now about how this is such a stereotype," she told me Wednesday. "I hate to be the one to set it straight, but I have dated boys that I fully expect to see on 'Jersey Shore.'

"They took longer to get ready than I did. They're hair was more immaculate. Their nails were manicured. They were spray tanned--the whole nine."

Law, who was raised in rural South Jersey in a suburb of Philadelphia, now lives in L.A. but spent a lot of time this past year in New Zealand, where she filmed "Spartacus" and a role in "Legend of the Seeker."

You can see Law--in leather but with no Snooki poof--at 4 p.m. Saturday on WGN when she guest stars as Mord'Sith warrior woman Garen in "LotS." The episode, "Extinction," is the second of two parts that kicked off last weekend with "Walter." ("Walter" repeats at 3 p.m. Saturday.)
